About Upper Mustang Trek

The Upper Mustang region has one of the most unique and interesting landscapes in Nepal. Much of the Mustang topography is desolate and similar in appearance to the Tibetan region, of which it shares its Northern border. From the Mustang there are commanding views toward the towering Himalayan ranges rising over 8000m with  views to Dhaulagiri and the Annapurna ranges. The trek starts from Jomsom and follows the Kali Gandaki River to Chhusang and Kagbeni. From here you start a steady climb to the village of Chele. From there you trek over many passes in the following days to reach the final destination of Lo Manthang. You have a choice of breaking your journey in unique mountain villages. You will walk past Mani stone walls, stupas, and Chortens, significant Buddhist structures, constructed in positions to offer protection and security to the passing traveler. You will pass thousand - year old caves hewn into the rock face, once used as tombs ordwellings and meditation chambersover 3000 years old, thought to be inhabited by the predecessors of the current inhabitants of this region. The Chungsi Cave Monastery, a popular Buddhist pilgrimage site, is visited on the way. This is certainly a memorable trip of a lifetime. Once in our final destination of Lo - ManTthang you will be guided through the Jhampa Gompa, ThupchenGompa and Chhyode Gompa, the three main monasteries of the town.

The main destination of the Upper Mustang trek is the walled city of Lo Manthang. Once the seat of the Royal family of this region. This part of Nepal has only been open to foreigners since 1992and is still governed by King Jigme Dorje PalbarBista. The entry fee for this region of Nepal is USD 500 per person for 10 days, then USD 50 per person for each additional day spent in the area. In addition an Annapurna Conservation permit must be carried at a cost of NPR 3000 per person.  A trek through the Upper Mustang region gives you a totally different experience than any of the other regions of Nepal. The Upper Mustang is described as a mystical and forbidden kingdom. An Upper Mustang Trek allows the traveler to witness the beautiful TransHimalayan landscape, experience clear and unpolluted skies, ancient Buddhist villages and rural life as it has been conducted for centuries. In this area we also cater for clients that may choose motorcycle or mountain biking tours as well as jeep safaris. If one chooses to return to Jomsom via Ghara the Luri Gompa can be visited. The best time to visit Upper Mustang is between May  to end of September.
