The Upper Mustang region has one of the most unique and interesting landscapes in Nepal. Much of the Mustang topography is desolate and similar in appearance to the Tibetan region, of which it shares its Northern border. From the Mustang there are commanding views toward the towering Himalayan ranges rising over 8000m with views to Dhaulagiri and the Annapurna ranges. The trek starts from Jomsom and follows the Kali Gandaki River to Chhusang and Kagbeni. From here you start a steady climb to the village of Chele. From there you trek over many passes in the following days to reach the final destination of Lo Manthang. You have a choice of breaking your journey in unique mountain villages. You will walk past Mani stone walls, stupas, and Chortens, significant Buddhist structures, constructed in positions to offer protection and security to the passing traveler. You will pass thousand - year old caves hewn into the rock face, once used as tombs ordwellings and meditation chambersover 3000 years old, thought to be inhabited by the predecessors of the current inhabitants of this region. The Chungsi Cave Monastery, a popular Buddhist pilgrimage site, is visited on the way.This is certainly a memorable trip of a lifetime. Once in our final destination of Lo - ManTthang you will be guided through the Jhampa Gompa, ThupchenGompa and Chhyode Gompa, the three main monasteries of the town.
The main destination of the Upper Mustang trek is the walled city of Lo Manthang. Once the seat of the Royal family of this region.
